The Connections Festival is the finale of the National Theatre’s yearlong, nationwide programme of new writing for young people. Youth theatre companies from Inverness to Cornwall, and Belfast to Norfolk have produced and performed these specially commissioned plays in schools and venues across the country and at Connections Festivals in 26 leading theatres. Ten of these young companies perform at the National Theatre festival.

We’ve teamed up with the National Theatre to bring you the chance to win tickets to your choice of three of the 2014 Connections Festival plays. We have 10 pairs of tickets to give away for Pronoun and A Letter to Lacey and 5 pairs for Horizon. Read on to find out how to enter the competition.

NT Connections Fest

Horizon
by Matt Hartley
Friday 4 July, 7pm, National Theatre

It’s the last day of the summer holidays and for one group of friends that means there is only one place to be: Horizon Shopping Centre. For some it’s a chance to gossip and flirt, grab a milkshake and a bargain in the sales, earn some money and catch a film. But for two sisters it’s everything they’ve come to resent: an image of what their future looks like. As closing time approaches a summer of resentment and frustration can no longer be contained and two sisters stand up and fight for what they believe in.

Pronoun
by Evan Placey
Monday 7 July, 8.30pm, National Theatre

Josh and Isabella are childhood sweethearts. They were meant to spend their gap year together, they were meant to be together forever. But Isabella has now become a boy.

A love story about transition, testosterone, and James Dean.

A Letter to Lacey
by Catherine Johnson
Monday 7 July, 8.30pm, National Theatre

Kara sits down to write an email to someone she’s never met: her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend. Reece was the love of her life and as Kara spills her heart out, we learn just what it took to be with him – from their first meeting in the local park to their final showdown in a hospital.

This play explores partner abuse and how it affects not just the couple involved, but their friends and family as well. Some of the content is shocking and sad; the musical numbers offer a little light-relief.
