Hotter, a two-hander devised and performed by Mary Higgins and Ell Potter, is a kaleidoscope of song, dance, verbatim theatre, sketch comedy and heartfelt monologues. It explores women’s obsession with their body image and drives home a loud, colourful and joyous message of body positivity. Through interviewing everyone from their grandmothers to transgender women, Higgins and Potter have created a fascinating piece of theatre that will make the audience laugh and, crucially, think.

Higgins and Potter, two gifted performers, shine in this bold, body-centred piece. It features everything from ‘cunting’ – bunting with drawings of genitals printed on it – to interviews about masturbation techniques. We learn about how different women perceive their bodies, we hear the performers’ responses to their findings, and we are shown physical comedy, modern dance and increasing nudity.

It is Higgins and Potter with their high level of comic ability and endearing frankness who make this show special. Their ability to take on and swiftly switch between characters when lip-syncing to interviews taped at Potter’s grandmother’s retirement home is extraordinary, and they move comfortably in their multi-layered outfits of bright shades of pink and red. The very feminist, very millennial aesthetic of fluffy coats, shades and flares is unapologetic and welcoming. They sweat, dance, sing and wank before us, and it feels highly liberating as an audience member to be in the presence of such relatable exuberance.

Though there is no real narrative and the themes have been done before, unapologetic and welcoming are two words that accurately describe the show as a whole. It is a celebration of women’s experiences – it respects each individual, treating everyone’s story, be they thirteen of ninety seven, with care. Hotter is what you want in a real Fringe piece – creative ideas, weird and wonderful staging, lots of humour, the cheeky bit of audience participation (don’t worry – it’s fun) and the underlying exploration of an important issue. I urge everyone to go.

Hotter is playing Paradise in Augustines until August 27.
