Best of BE Festival
Barbican
8-11 October, 7.45pm
Crossing geographical borders, BE (Birmingham European) FESTIVAL champions the work of original and daring theatre makers from across the continent.
Three highlights from this year’s festival are showcased together in an eclectic programme. The prizewinning performances form part of a convivial evening in which there is time to exchange ideas with fellow audience and company members during informal post-show gatherings and a shared meal in the Theatre’s Green Room.
Diverse and dynamic, with an emphasis on physicality, Best of BE FESTIVAL represents new European theatre seeking to break down barriers in more ways than one.
From the Waltz to the Mambo, by Hungary’s Radioballet, is a funny exploration of dogmas surrounding beauty and education inspired by a 1960s Hungarian ballroom dance manual. From Austria, Julia Schwarzbach’s Loops and Breaks puts the audience in the spotlight as she instructs them with phrases and language specific to each venue, inspired by overheard conversations in each area. Finally,Waiting by the award-winning Mokhallad Rasem from Belgium/Iraq is a meditation through film, movement, art and sound on the human experience of waiting.
