ECCLESIA presents their debut London show, The House of Bernarda Alba by Federico Garcia Lorca, in an adaption by David Hare, directed by company artistic director Scott Hurran.
Following the recent death of Bernarda’s husband the Alba household enters a lengthy period of mourning. Bernarda lives to control everyone and everything within her household. The matriarch lives with her five adult daughters and her Ill elderly mother in a joyless, and bleak home where her word is final. Her daughters are all unmarried, and are rapidly approaching middle age, with no husbands, and no prospects. When the eldest daughter Angustias, becomes engaged to local man Pepe el Romano, unruly passions begin to fill the Alba household.
‘The mourning will last for eight years, and in that eight years there’ll be not a breath of air from the street. No. It’ll be as if we’ve bricked up the very doors and windows. That’s how it was in my father’s house, and my grandfather’s too. That’s how you mourn.’
