2015HOGWALL_APNThe Hogwallops are not simply a circus troupe. Rather, an eccentric family of misfits who are all very good at throwing each other around the stage, and so this domesticity is given a circus twist. Or maybe circus craziness given a domestic twist? Either way, the ordinary becomes extraordinary: a zimmer frame is a trapeze, the washing line is a high rope. It is quite unlike any other circus act I have ever seen.

We  join them in what feels like a cluttered kitchen, the stage full of rickety tables, tall old lamps, and a sixties syle radio. It is charmingly eccentric and retro, just like this family troop of performers with their colourful clothing. The Hogwallops play  games and practical jokes,  and are constantly at loggerheads. Just like any family they often want to kill each other, but ultimately are all banded together by a stronger bond.
This show from Lost in Translation Theatre features breathtaking physical performances, set against a brilliant score. They are crazy and ridiculous, but also completely infectious, and it feels like just what circus should be.
This company have mastered the art of giving an edge to a genre which can often consist of collections of amazing stunts performed by very talented people, but without much heart. The Hogwallops seamlessly mixes circus performance with dance, physical theatre, comedy and throws in a big handful of jokes, cake baking and even romance. Director Chris Dingli gets the gets the combination of circus, theater and storytelling spot on.  It’s a touching, adrenaline fulled show that is perfect for families.
The Hogwallops is playing at Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows (Venue 360) from 20-23, 25-29 August, as part of the Edinburgh Fringe. For more information, visit the Festival website
