2015MORROAN_GI

There is, as always, an extraordinarily tall man sitting in front of me. His neck placed directly between my head and the stage, he turns in the middle of the performance and mouths, his eyes almost watering with innocent disbelief; “What is going on?”. At that moment, in a beautiful display of comedic irony, a tampon (yes a tampon) come hurtling through the air, narrowly dodges the gawping lady in front of him and settles itself between his shoes. Some things you simply cannot script.

Morro and Jasp smack their audience in the face with a bewildering caricature of teenage girlhood. Endlessly energetic, the two paint an inner world of teenage adolescence as bright as the fluorescent paint dribbled on their faces. As they create a space of agonising frankness, I struggle to strip away my very English inhibition- periods haha! Blood, menstrual cramps, underwear and toilets! Funny – right?

Moving swiftly the pair confront the taboo, embarrassing elements of adolescence. Jasp practically bubbles with fairy-tale like dreams, Morro switches between demanding ‘a smoke’ from the audience members and shoving crisps in her mouth. Makeovers! Boys! Secret diaries and pin gel pens – cliché is embraced, only suspended in tantalising moments when the fourth wall is broken.

If not acted out with a love that only comes from truly brilliant clowns, the satire may have crossed into the dangerous realm of cringe. As it stands, every joke is funny, every wide-eyed twitch (there are many) is appropriate and all attention is sustained. As soon as my energy falls limp, I am graciously handed a free Cheeto. The pair make audience interaction effortless and non-confrontational – a rare thing compared to the clowns of my childhood, where participation was an anxiety-inducing, laugh-or-face-imminent-death experience. Morro and Jasp unravel their script with an infectious joy. Bewildering, absurd and fun – watch it if it sounds at all appealing.

Morro and Jasp Do Puberty is playing from August 18th – 23rd at Gilded Balloon (Venue 14) until August  31. For more information and tickets, see the Edinburgh Fringe website.
