Nothing says fun quite like wave-particle duality, theories of critical opalescence and thermodynamic fluctuations. Am I right? Albert Einstein thinks so. He’s here to prove that physics can be fun, armed with a talking brain puppet and metaphors involving a lightsaber and Hetty the hoover.
With a name like Albert Einstein: Relativitively Speaking, naturally this show attracts a very specific audience. I suddenly find myself among people who know (off the top of their head) the exact speed of light and the average walking pace of a human being. (186,000 m/s and 5kmph, respectively, in case you were wondering). This is probably why our eccentric host Einstein has a bit of a job dragging us along with him. Granted, he gets a fair few willing volunteers to assist with metaphors. But when it comes to getting the whole audience involved, the success rate dips slightly, which is probably the downside of attracting such an intellectual demographic.
Albert Einstein: Relativitively Speaking is unapologetically barmy. This is particularly true in the various musical numbers, accompanied by our very own maestro, Mrs. Einstein. My favourite of which has to be the rap piece on E=MC2. Who needs MC Hammer when you have E=MC2? It even comes with hand movements so we can willingly join in – but again, participation rate probably lies at about 68%.
For someone who barely scraped a pass at GCSE Physics, some of the science does go over my head – even with the use of simplified metaphors. However, I’m not here for a physics lecture (thank goodness). I’m here for a comedy Fringe show and Albert Einstein: Relativitively Speaking is definitely funny. Ridiculously silly and slightly insane, but funny nonetheless.
Albert Einstein: Relatively Speaking is playing at Pleasance Courtyard (venue 33) August 23th, 27th, and 30th. For more information, visit the Fringe website.
