Birdland
by Simon Stephens
Royal Court Theatre, Jerwood Theatre Downstairs
3 April – 31 May

The last week of a massive international tour and rock star Paul (played by Andrew Scott, the award-winning Moriarty in BBC’s Sherlock) is at the height of his fame. Everybody knows his name. Whatever he wants he can have. He can screw anybody he wants to. He can buy anything he desires. He can eat anything. Drink anything. Smoke anything. Go anywhere. As the inevitability of the end of the road looms closer, and a return home becomes a reality, for Paul, the music is starting to jar.

Simon Stephens’ new play, directed by Carrie Cracknell, is a piercing new play looking at empathy, money and fame.

“Excellent, an eye-popping, fast-moving blur of glitter and neon” – Time Out

“Scott’s scorching performance radiates a tormented need. In just 110 minutes, the sweetness leaches out of him, leaving eyes hard as jet. He dances in a transfixing, feral shuttle, as if trying to dodge the camera flashes that assail him. It’s a glittering dance of the damned.” – Sunday Times

Birdland runs until 31 May with £10 tickets for under 26 year olds.
