“That’s not even a real thing…” Very often in life we make up scenarios in our heads, start to believe them, then realise they will never be real. And then there are many things we come across in life that we could have never even possibly imagined; Robin (A One Man Comedy) is one of these. Bizarre and bewildering, I am trying extremely hard to put words together that will help you to understand this piece, as I am not sure I have quite got a grip on it myself.
In a basement studio, in sweltering heat, we sit facing a desk with a laptop and an old video player on top of it. We have a peculiar feeling that perhaps we are about to see a piece of theatre that may be out of the ordinary. A small man runs on to talk into a microphone about being live on a radio station. He then plays various different, questionable characters, including a man in A&E wanting to know if he has chlamydia, and a mother and son who were supposed to be from Eastenders but somehow had Liverpudlian accents – perhaps there was a reason for this but I am a long way from finding out. That sort of encapsulates the whole play, which seemed to lack a clear and careful story line.
Many may find this one-man farce by Adam Drake and Ben Rowse fits perfectly with their sense of humour, due to its ludicrously exaggerated scenarios and expressions, and the fact that everything was slapstick in nature with egg and milk being thrown and clothes being ripped off. However, I would not cease to be amazed if anyone found the idea of this play interesting and was able to find the precise meaning. Despite much thought I still need to puzzle out every single part of it to get some sense and story, despite the fact that many scenes were repeated during the performance.
The whole audience seemed to be uncomfortably quiet through the majority of this play, which is disappointing seeing as it was trying terribly hard to make us laugh the whole way through. This piece of fringe theatre is definitely a piece to see if you love humour that is so outrageous it lacks sense, though rather not one if want your faith lifted in modern theatre.
Robin (A One Man Comedy) is playing at Just The Tonic At The Cave until 25 of August 2013. For more information and tickets see PBH’s Free Fringe website
