Incoming Festival

We’re soon to hit the halfway point at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which seems a perfect moment to pause and take stock of everything that we at A Younger Theatre have seen and achieved so far. It’s been a challenging and rewarding few days for us. This is the second year we have been reporting fully from the festival with a team of talented writers, and our second year as a media partner for C venues, with support from IdeasTap. Whilst we’ve seen and reviewed more than 120 shows (the full list of our coverage can be found here) we’ve also been looking for companies performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival that we could potentially programme for our Incoming Festival.

This is a different move for us as a company. We’ve spent the past four years building ourselves as a publication for and by young people, but Incoming Festival marks our first step into building a platform for theatre, too. We have a strong ethos and mission, and believe that we can support and provide a platform for those emerging in the arts – whether this is through writing about theatre, seeing it or indeed performing it. We’re committed to the development of emerging talent, and assisting them in building a career in the theatre, whatever shape that takes.

We are extremely excited by what the Incoming Festival can archive, not only for us, but also for those that we can support during the festival. So what has this really got to do with the halfway point of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, I hear you ask? Well, we’ve been a bit quiet about making it known that we are actively seeking work. We had an open call for submissions last month and we’ve had lots through. We’ve listened to our colleagues and tried to scout out work, but we know there are more companies who fit the bill for Incoming Festival performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

So consider this a call to arms.

If you feel that you fit the category of an “emerging theatre company”, then we want you to get in touch. If you feel that your work is on the edge of something new, is challenging and performative, and is showing the industry who you are and what you might be presenting in the future, then get in touch. We’re looking for the best emerging theatre companies, which fit the New Diorama Theatre’s mission of being the theatre for theatre companies. Is that your company?

One Sentence on why you’d be a good fit for the Incoming Festival.

We’ve got the last week during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which is completely clear for our Artistic Director (that’s me, Jake!) or Managing Editor (Eleanor) to come and see your work. Do get in touch.

As a note: inviting us to see your show for Incoming Festival does not mean we’ll be reviewing it, it’s purely for festival purposes. We will see as many shows as we possibly can, but an application doesn’t automatically mean that we’ll be able to see your show.

So we’re nearly at the halfway point and we might be flagging, but we’ve done one hell a lot so far at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival and we have one hell of a long way to go yet. If you see the A Younger Theatre team in the street, at a show or even in our offices at C nova, then make sure that you say hello.
