The team behind a new interactive theatre performance based on the cult TV show Twin Peaks have started a Kickstarter campaign to get it off the ground.
The Shells – Ausflug nach Neu-Friedenwald is an updated version of the 90s TV show, to be performed in Berlin-Temelhof later this year.
Jos Porath, one of the co-directors of the performance, said: “We feel like interactive theatre is the one medium that allows us to create an aesthetic conglomerate and still make something completely new and original that can actually be directly experienced by an audience.
“The Shells is about de-constructing a seemingly untouchable cult phenomenon, about consciously making something familiar like American pop culture unfamiliar and turning it into art that engages rather than only entertains recipients.”
The Kickstarter campaign is aiming to raise £6,500 for the production, by April 19.
It is an ambitious project, with 60 members of the cast and crew, and a 500 square metres set.
The want to build the whole re-imagined town of Twin Peaks, complete with the famous diner, as well as a town hall.
The team have worked with Secret Cinema and Punch Drunk among others to help with the large-scale plans.
Kirsten Brandt, another co-director of The Shells – Ausflug nach Neu-Friedenwald, said: “With Twin Peaks being a cult phenomenon with such a huge international fan base, and since our project is thoroughly informed by the idea of creative collaboration between artists from all over the world (though mostly based in Berlin and London) we wanted to give asking this enormous community to help us a shot.
“Of course, the announcement of a third season was made so we also figured that there would be a renewed general interest in Twin Peaks that would help us get the word out there – and it definitely did.”
Twin Peaks marks its 25th anniversary in 2015.
The Shells – Ausflug nach Neu-Friedenwald is set to be performed on June 13-20 this summer in Berlin. For more information click here, or to visit the Kickstarter page, click here.
